Frathood Weekend

“A Link to Our Past and a Bridge to Our Future”

October 26th -29th, 2023

Retreat Agenda

Sigma Xi Theta Frathood Retreat

Introduction

Frathood Weekend, used in the context of an organizational retreat, refers to withdrawing from the normal scene for the purpose of reflection and evaluation, as well as to give fraternity members the opportunity to recharge, contemplate, bond, and renew. Frathood Weekends give our members an opportunity to take a step back to assess the organization and make plans to enhance their sense of dedication through the upcoming months. They are also a time for members to brainstorm ideas, express concerns, provide praise, and appreciate the fraternity Pillars in an informal environment.

In order to be productive and successful, we must take time to evaluate our position, set goals and objectives, and generally decide its course for the future. Some of the basic goals of Frathood Weekend are to:

  • To ignite the determination of Frats
  • To prepare Frats to uplift their community and to be an example of positivity
  • To promote frathood and a sense of community
  • To resolve problems, conflicts and improve communication
  • To give Frats an opportunity to reflect on the purpose of the Fraternity
  • To set goals and objectives to improve fraternity bonds
  • To give each member a chance to share their thoughts and ideas
  • To renew the members commitment to the Fraternity

Team Building Activities

Team Building Activities

Theme: CONFLICT RESOLUTION & GROUP DYNAMICS

1. Scavenger Hunt
Rules: Break the group into teams of two or more. Make a list of goofy tasks for each team to do
as a group. Tasks can include taking a selfie with a stranger, taking a picture of a building or
object around the office, etc. Give the list to each team, along with a deadline by which they
must complete all tasks. Whoever completes the most tasks the quickest, wins! (You can even
create your own point system according to task difficulty if you want!) Objective: Great team
bonding exercise that helps break up cliques by encouraging frats to work with those from other
teams.

2. Mine Field
Place “mines” – objects such as cones or bowling pins – small distances apart, in a random
fashion. Divide the frats into pairs. In each pair, one person is blindfolded and left on one side
of the mine field, and the other person – the “guide” – is at the other end and cannot enter the
field. The activity consists of the “guide” calling out instructions to the blindfolded frat to help
her walk across the field, avoiding the “mines.” On successful completion, the pair swaps
roles, with the blindfolded person now becoming the “guide.” This activity creates trust and
respect for the judgment of the “guide.”

Theme: RESPECT

3. Say Something Nice
Get all group members to sit in a large circle, give each one a sheet of paper. Have each person
write their name at the top of the page, pass the sheet around the group. At the bottom of the
paper, each person writes one thing she values about the person whose name is on the sheet,
folds it so the next person cannot see what she has written, and passes it on. This continues
until everyone receives back the sheet with their name on it. Have each person silently read
what others have written

Negatives and Positives
Rules: Partner A shares something negative that happened in their life with Partner B. It can be
a personal or work-related memory, but it has to be true. Then Partner A discusses the same
experience again but focuses only on the positive aspects. Partner B helps explore the silver
lining of the bad experience. Afterward, they switch roles. Objective: Participants discover
how to reframe negative situations into learning experiences together.

Theme: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

4. How Well Do You Know Your FRATS?
Take some sticky notes and individually write out the names of all frats present. Whoever is
facilitating the exercise assigns the identity of each frat to another until all names are taken.
Frats place the sticky notes on their foreheads and are allowed 30 minutes to mingle among
themselves to figure out who they are.

5. Blind Drawing
Rules: Divide Frats into groups of two. Have the two individuals sit back-to-back. Give
one person the pen and paper and the other person the picture. The person with the picture
describes the picture to their teammate without actually saying what it is. For example, if the
image is a worm in an apple, do not say, “Draw an apple with a worm in it.” The person with
the pen and paper draws what they think the picture depicts, based on the verbal description.
Set a time limit of 10 – 15 minutes.

Objective: This is an activity that focuses on interpretation and communication. Once the drawing is finished, it’s always interesting to see how the drawer
interprets their partner’s description

Docking Session- (If No Interest Meeting)

Docking Session- (If No Interest Meeting) 12-1 pm

Objective: To build confidence, gain knowledge and improve our approach to recruitment and
public speaking.

• Who is SigXi? – Role Play exercise in which frats will get the opportunity to improve
scenarios where they are interacting with interests, community leaders, other greeks, and
political officials in their territory. This opportunity offers all frats the chance to work on
their on-the-spot answers to frequently asked questions from different kinds of people
within the communities we serve. This activity will also allow members to learn from one
another through a healthy exchange of praise and constructive critiques meant to help
improve SigXi’s interpersonal relations with the community.

• Elevator Pitch- An elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that you use to spark
interest in what your organization does. You can also use them to create interest in a
project, idea, or product – or in yourself. A good elevator pitch should last no longer than
a short elevator ride of 20 to 30 seconds, hence the name. They should be interesting,
memorable, and succinct. They also need to explain what makes your organization
unique. Give each member a sheet of notebook paper, and allow them 10-20 minutes to
brainstorm their elevator pitch. Once time is up, have each member come to the front of
the room and sell their elevator pitch as if everyone they are speaking to are nonmember.
Time the speeches to ensure they do not go over 30 seconds, open the floor for everyone
to give praise and constructive advice from tone to body language with the intention to
help their fellow Frat to represent the fraternity with the best personal image.

Then, Now and Beyond, Living the Creed & Wood Projects 2-5pm
Then, Now and Beyond-30 mins
Take a poster board and with a black sharpie divide the board into 3 columns. At the top of the
column from left to right, you will label them Then/Now/Beyond. Then refers to everyone’s time
as an interest and a neo, Now refers to the present moment and Beyond is what the member hopes
to gain along their journey beyond this moment and into the future. Have frats write their
Then/Now/Beyond sentiments on 3 different sticky notes and place them under their appropriate
categories. After all, have finished, allow each person to share what they wrote and why? The
objective of this activity is to instill rededication in the individual member by sharing memories
of their early beginnings, challenges, and triumphs of the present and optimistic and positive
hopes for the future.

Living the Creed Round Table Discussion and Wood Projects -1hr
A fraternal round table discussion among frats on living the creed, maintaining enthusiasm for
the endeavors of the frathood, exemplifying the culture and protecting the character of Sigma Xi
Theta Fraternity Inc. Choose a wood project for frats to work on together as the discussion goes on,
allow to dry in a safe space, and take it home the next day.

Join us October 26 – 29, 2023 as we dock in Miami for SigXi’s Fraternity Retreat.

  • to stimulate the determination of the frats

  • to prepare them to lift their community and be an example of positivity
