LGBT youth development is critical. In order for the strides we make today to not be undone, we must groom the next generation to be advocates for their right to live without fear of persecution or discrimination.
Through mentoring, scholarship funds and SigXi signature outreach programs we can help develop the younger generation into confident, self-aware adults who are equipped to face a rapidly changing world.
LGBT Youth Empowerment
The ALLIANCE provides both mentoring and rewarding experiences to enhance the lives of LGBT youth. Since the fundamental purpose of Sigma Xi Theta is to foster wisdom through unity, it is a Fraternity focus to assist with developing the younger generation of dominant lesbian youth into confident, self-aware adults who are equipped to face a changing world.
The Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once) Initiative is a program designed to prepare the next generation of young dominant lesbians to be advocates for their right to live without fear of persecution or discrimination and to grow and develop their leadership talents.
The basic goals of the Y.O.L.O. Initiative may be summarized as follows:
• To help LGBT youth in their selection of professions well matched with their skills and charisma.
• To assist LGBT youth in preparing for employment, and to support continued success through workshops, seminars, and social activities.
• To assist parents of LGBT youth in understanding and communicating with adolescent LGBT youth in a safe and nurturing environment, by given them the opportunity to talk over their difficulties with those who have life experiences to share.
